Start with the planned arrival, then subtract the time needed to disembark, reach the activity, return to the port and meet the passenger check-in requirement. The result is the time actually available for the visit, not the full interval between ferry times. Include the onward bus or collection rather than assuming everything starts at the harbour. If that leaves only a rushed experience, choose a nearer activity or a different date. A longer outward crossing does not create a longer day on the island.

Choose an earlier preferred return where possible

Identify the ferry you intend to catch and whether a later usable sailing exists. A later departure only counts as a fallback if it still connects with your mainland journey home and has a workable booking arrangement. Carry clothing suitable for waiting near an exposed harbour; a waterproof jacket can help with comfort but should not encourage an unrealistic outdoor plan. Keep enough time for a slow transfer without depending on rushing.

Make the mainland return part of the decision

Check what happens after the ferry docks: station access, the next bus, car-park arrangements and the remaining drive. A later ferry may technically return you to the mainland while leaving the actual journey home unresolved. If disruption occurs, contact the relevant operators and review the whole chain before making replacement bookings. Keep confirmations for the decisions you make. The best island day is one with enough space to enjoy the visit and a clear point at which the return takes priority.
