Buying a study laptop: start with course requirements
Choose a study laptop from your course's software requirements, portability and available support.
Ask the course or institution for its current hardware and operating-system requirements before shopping. General note-taking and specialist design or engineering software can need different machines. A laptop described as “student” does not prove it runs your required applications.

Check the software first
List mandatory applications and whether they require local installation, a particular operating system or specific hardware. Ask about campus computers or remote access where available. A tablet or browser-focused device may be sufficient for some courses and unsuitable for others.
Check whether software licences are already provided. Include any necessary licences and accessories in the budget, but do not buy duplicate subscriptions automatically.
Compare the daily routine
Consider carrying weight, charger size, keyboard comfort and screen readability. Try the keyboard if possible. Check ports for the devices you will actually connect and whether adapters are required.
Read warranty and repair arrangements, especially if the laptop is essential for deadlines. A refurbished model can be worth comparing when its condition, support and software compatibility are clear.
Before checkout
- Obtain the course's current technical requirements.
- Check institutional software and computer access.
- Compare a complete portable setup and repair support.

Student laptop
Compare exact specifications against the course requirements. Do not substitute a similar product name or a large discount for confirmed application and operating-system support.
Laptop sleeve
Measure the actual device rather than relying only on screen size. A suitable sleeve can reduce knocks in a bag but does not replace careful handling or a backup of your work.
