A hand mixer or stand mixer: which task needs help?

Compare mixers by the recipes and quantities you repeat, with attention to attachments, storage and supported loads.

List the mixing jobs you currently find difficult. Whipping a small quantity, mixing cake batter and kneading dough are not identical tasks. Read the manufacturer's guidance for the intended mixture and quantity before choosing power or size.

Compare your real batch

A hand mixer can be convenient for occasional suitable tasks and small kitchens. A stand mixer may help with repeated supported jobs, but needs stable space and appropriate bowl capacity. Large bowls are not automatically effective for every small quantity.

Check included attachments and whether the maker permits the task you intend. Do not push a mixer beyond its stated capacity or duty cycle because an online video does so.

Include handling and cleaning

Try lifting and storing the appliance if possible. Check whether attachments and bowls fit your washing arrangements. A heavy mixer stored in a low cupboard may be inconvenient if you must lift it before every use.

Compare replacement attachment availability and the exact model's warranty. Similar product names can contain different bowls or accessory packages.

Decide from frequency

  • Keep manual tools when they already handle the job comfortably.
  • Choose a mixer for a repeated, supported task.
  • Compare bowl size, attachments and storage together.
