Check institutional access first

Search the university's current software catalogue while signed in and read whether access is available on managed computers, personal devices or through a remote environment. Note the supplied version, installation limit, course eligibility and support route. A computer-lab licence may cover occasional work but not an assignment that must be completed offline at home.

Ask the course team what file formats, plug-ins and version range they accept. Free or web-based alternatives can be capable, but changing tools without checking may create export, collaboration or assessment problems. Record any institution-provided cloud storage and avoid buying a consumer bundle that simply duplicates an entitlement already included with enrolment.

Normalize the licence terms

For each offer, write the exact edition, applications included, permitted use, device count, access start and expiry, update policy and renewal method. Distinguish a subscription from a perpetual licence with optional upgrades. Education terms may restrict commercial work or transfer, so make sure the planned use falls within the current licence wording.

Check verification steps and the date on which student status must be renewed. Use the vendor or university's official process rather than sending identity documents to an unknown seller. If an academic reseller supplies a key, confirm the named product, supported region and account redemption route before considering its advertised saving.

Compare features and compatibility

Build a short requirement list from actual coursework: operating system, processor architecture, memory, graphics support, specialist modules, collaboration and required export formats. Test a legitimate trial only when its terms suit the schedule. A discounted package with many applications is poor value if the one assessed tool is absent or cannot run on the student's computer.

Consider storage and file access separately from the editor. Check where projects are saved, how backups work, whether institutional login is needed and which formats can be exported before access ends. Plan a lawful route for opening essential work after graduation instead of assuming a subscription account will remain active throughout a portfolio or resit period.

Calculate the study-period cost

Choose a comparison period that reaches the final relevant submission, then total each licence at its stated prices across that span. Include required add-ons and exclude speculative future promotions. Where a public sale covers only an initial term, show the currently stated renewal arrangement separately rather than extending the temporary rate across the whole course.

Before paying, repeat the institutional-access check because entitlements can differ by department or academic year. Confirm the final basket, renewal setting and refund terms, then save the licence record. Set a diary date before expiry to export files and reassess need; convenience should not turn a finished module into an unattended renewal.
