Record the number of bags, permitted external dimensions, weight allowance where applicable, and whether the bag must fit under a seat or may go overhead. easyJet and Ryanair publish their own bag policies, but the allowance on your chosen booking is the controlling check. Do not transfer an allowance from a friend's fare or a previous trip without confirming it.

If two carriers have different restrictions, decide whether one bag must satisfy both or whether paid baggage is already part of your plan. Compare that whole journey before ordering a case. A larger bag plus extra baggage charges is a different purchase from a compact bag within an existing allowance. Include uncertainty about an unbooked return instead of treating its baggage terms as known.

Measure outside rather than counting litres

Ask for external dimensions including wheels, handles and protruding pockets. Internal capacity is useful for packing, but it does not establish whether the bag fits the airline's limits. Check the dimensions in the normal travel configuration, with an expansion zip closed if necessary. If a retailer publishes conflicting numbers, obtain clarification for the exact model before depending on either figure.

Soft luggage can bulge after packing, so measure it with your intended contents rather than assuming it always compresses to its empty dimensions. Conversely, rigid wheels and handles do not compress. Use the objects you actually carry to test the opening, corners and usable depth. A high capacity number may be less useful than a shape that takes your particular shoes and folded clothes.

Test the journey beyond the aircraft

Consider stairs, cobbled streets, public transport and accommodation access alongside the airport floor. Try lifting a comparable loaded bag onto a stable surface at home and moving it through a doorway. Decide whether you need wheels, a shoulder strap or a carrying handle that stays comfortable in your hand. Do not equate more wheels with an easier journey in every setting.

Record empty weight because it uses part of any applicable bag weight allowance before you pack. Check whether the telescopic handle feels usable at your height and whether the interior can be reached without laying the case across a narrow room. These are practical observations you can make in a shop; they are not durability tests or proof of future performance.

Compare complete prices and keep a fallback

Put the bag price, delivery and any necessary baggage extras in one comparison. Confirm that a set includes the size you need rather than assigning value to an unwanted matching case. Look at replacement wheel or handle information when the manufacturer provides it, but do not assume parts from another model will fit. Read return terms before removing tags or travelling.

Pack and measure promptly after arrival, leaving time to resolve a mismatch. Save the manufacturer's dimensions and the booking allowance with your travel notes, and check airline information again before departure because arrangements can change. If the bag fails your practical check, use a suitable existing alternative or amend the luggage plan. An appealing case should not dictate an otherwise unnecessary baggage upgrade.
