Separate the cooling technologies

A conventional fan moves air; its presence does not establish that a room will reach a chosen temperature. An evaporative cooler draws air through wet media and adds moisture. A water tank and ice compartment therefore do not make an evaporative unit equivalent to refrigerated air conditioning.

Read the manufacturer's description for the exact model rather than relying on the retailer's category. If a product needs an exhaust hose, find the required window arrangement and supplied kit. If it needs water, find filling, draining and cleaning instructions. Reject a listing that leaves the operating method unclear, even when its photographs resemble another appliance you recognise.

Measure the usable position

Mark the proposed footprint using paper, including the space needed to operate controls, open a tank and move past the appliance. Check where the cable would run without obstructing the doorway. A tower's narrow body can be misleading if its base is wide, while a desk fan may consume the only practical work surface in a small room.

Compare the settings you expect to use, not only maximum airflow or the largest advertised coverage area. Look for sound information that names the setting and measurement conditions; different unqualified noise figures are hard to compare. Ask whether indicator lights can be dimmed and whether the controls are accessible from the intended position, including for anyone sharing the room.

Price the complete usable purchase

For a water-based cooler, include any specified replaceable media and routine care requirements. For a portable air conditioner, include the compatible exhaust arrangement and installation constraints. An apparently cheaper unit can become an expensive unused object if a necessary component cannot fit your window.

Calculate electricity estimates only from the stated input power, an explicit number of operating hours and your own tariff. Label that as an estimate rather than a measured bill saving. Different settings and controls can change actual consumption. Do not assign a cash value to advertised cooling performance or assume that a larger unit will be economical for a smaller occupied area.
