Course certificates and qualifications: check the exact award

Check what a course certificate represents and whether the organisation receiving it accepts the exact award.

A course completion certificate, professional certification and regulated qualification can represent different things. Copy the full award name and awarding organisation before comparing courses. Do not rely only on a provider's broad “accredited” badge.

Ask the receiving organisation

If the course is needed for employment, admission or professional requirements, ask the employer, institution or relevant body whether it accepts that exact award. Keep the response with the course details. Similar titles do not prove equivalence.

Use the appropriate official qualification register where relevant to the jurisdiction and award type. Check the awarding organisation and qualification itself, not only the training provider's marketing page.

Separate teaching from assessment

Find out whether the listed price includes the exam, assessment, resits and certificate. Check identity or supervised-assessment requirements and whether booking occurs through a different organisation.

Read renewal or continuing-development requirements for professional credentials. A one-time course fee may not represent the complete cost of maintaining a certification.

Before paying

  • Record the exact award and awarding body.
  • Verify acceptance for your intended purpose.
  • Separate tuition, exams and renewal costs.
