Exercise mats: choose for movement, space and cleaning

Choose an exercise mat by the activity, available floor space and stable use rather than thickness alone.

Find out what the class, instructor or exercise programme requires. A mat for gentle floor work can have different priorities from one used for standing balance. Start with an activity appropriate to your circumstances, seeking professional guidance where needed.

Check the complete space

Measure the floor area and leave the clearance the activity requires. Keep furniture, pets and loose objects away. Test whether the mat stays in place on the actual surface according to its intended use.

Thickness, firmness and grip interact. A very soft mat may feel comfortable when lying down but behave differently during balance work. Read the product's stated purpose and ask the instructor if you are uncertain.

Include cleaning and storage

Check materials and any relevant sensitivity considerations. Follow cleaning and drying instructions, particularly if the mat is shared. Store it where it can dry properly and does not create a trip hazard.

Compare rolled size and carrying weight if attending classes. A mat that is awkward to carry may be less useful than a simpler suitable model or equipment the venue already provides.

Before buying

  • Ask what the activity actually requires.
  • Check grip and stability on your floor.
  • Plan cleaning, drying and storage.
