A desk comfort check before buying an office chair

Review your chair, screen and keyboard together before buying a single accessory to solve desk discomfort.

Look at your normal working position and how long you remain in it. Adjust the equipment you already have within its intended range. For work-related screen use, follow your employer's assessment process and HSE guidance rather than relying on a generic product recommendation.

Treat the setup as a whole

Check that you can reach the keyboard and mouse comfortably and see the screen clearly. A raised laptop may require separate input devices. An expensive chair cannot fix a desk arrangement that forces awkward reach.

Make one adjustment at a time and note whether it helps. Include breaks and changes of activity in the working routine. If discomfort persists, seek appropriate occupational-health or clinical advice rather than repeatedly buying cushions.

Measure before ordering

Record chair adjustment needs, desk clearance and monitor dimensions. Check load limits and mounting requirements for any stand or arm. A product described as ergonomic is not automatically suitable for every person or desk.

Try the chair or accessory where possible and read return conditions. A sensible trial matters because fit and comfort can be difficult to predict from a photograph.

Before spending

  • Adjust the existing setup and request a workplace assessment where relevant.
  • Identify a specific remaining reach or support problem.
  • Check dimensions and return arrangements.
