Agree a specific quiet window

Tell housemates the interview time and the period you need for setup and possible overrun. Ask about predictable noise such as deliveries, music practice or work calls. A message saying 'I have an interview on Tuesday' is less useful than a clear request covering the room and a defined time. Check that everyone affected has seen it.

If you share the room, agree where the other person can be during the call and when you will free the space. Put a simple reminder on the door if appropriate. Avoid promising the recruiter complete silence; the practical aim is to reduce avoidable interruptions. If the household cannot provide the conditions, move to a bookable alternative early enough to test it.

Test the actual interview route

Open the platform named in the invitation on the device and browser you intend to use. Check camera and microphone permissions, your displayed name and the audio input selected. A built-in microphone can remain active even after you connect a headset, so verify the selected device and make a short test recording or call.

Test in the chosen room at a similar time of day where possible. Listen for fan noise, keyboard taps and household sounds. If the connection is unstable, try a suitable wired connection if available or another approved location. Do not assume a phone hotspot will work: check signal, data allowance and whether the interview software supports the intended fallback.

Make the picture easy to read

Place the laptop on a stable surface and frame yourself with a little space around your head and shoulders. Check the image at the same time of day as the interview, since a bright window behind you may make your face difficult to see. Adjust curtains, position or an existing lamp before shopping for specialist lighting.

Remove private paperwork and distracting items visible in the frame. A plain part of the room is enough. If you use a virtual background, test how it behaves when you move rather than discovering during the interview that it obscures your hands or face. Keep the device connected to suitable power and position cables so they will not be pulled accidentally.

Prepare useful prompts and a recovery plan

Keep the job description, a few examples and questions for the employer within easy reach. Use brief prompts rather than a full script that encourages continuous reading. Practise answering aloud while looking towards the camera naturally. If you need to share a portfolio, close unrelated tabs and rehearse opening the correct file without exposing personal messages.

Save the recruiter contact and meeting link somewhere accessible from another device. Decide what you would do if disconnected: attempt to rejoin, then contact the recruiter through the channel they provided. A short message explaining the connection problem is more useful than repeatedly restarting without communication. Ask in advance about any adjustments you need for the interview process.

Leave time for a calm start and clean finish

Before joining, silence avoidable notifications, close unnecessary applications and check audio once more. Keep water nearby but away from electronics. Use the platform's preview screen if available, and be ready at the time requested in the invitation. Make sure housemates know when you have finished rather than leaving them guessing whether they can use the kitchen again.

After the call, write down questions you were asked, examples you want to improve and any next steps the employer gave. Release a booked room promptly if you used one. Only buy new interview equipment if your rehearsal identified a specific unresolved issue, such as a microphone that repeatedly fails. A reliable existing setup is a better basis for preparation than a last-minute box of unfamiliar accessories.
