Gaming lag: check the network before buying a router
Separate connection lag from low frame rate with a few controlled checks before replacing your network equipment.
Lag is often used to describe different problems. Note whether the image stutters locally, actions arrive late online or the game disconnects. Record the game, device, time and whether other household activity was using the connection.

Compare online and offline behaviour
Try an offline mode if the game has one. If the same visual stutter remains, investigate graphics settings and device performance rather than the router first. If the problem only appears online, compare another online game or service.
Check the game's official service status. A remote outage cannot be fixed by buying a faster home router. Avoid changing many network settings before establishing whether the issue is within your home.
Try a controlled connection
Where supported, temporarily connect the gaming device to the router with Ethernet. Route the cable safely and avoid trip hazards. Compare the same activity at a similar time. A better wired result points towards the local wireless path, though it does not identify every cause.
Pause large downloads and check whether wireless coverage improves closer to the router. Do not factory-reset equipment or alter provider settings without knowing how to restore the connection.
Buy for the identified gap
- Keep a note of the symptom and controlled test results.
- Check service status before altering equipment.
- Compare a suitable wired connection before a whole-network upgrade.

Ethernet cable
A supported wired connection can be a low-cost test or permanent solution. Measure a safe route and confirm the device has a compatible port before purchasing a long cable.
Wi-Fi adapter
Consider only when your PC's wireless capability is the confirmed limitation. Check operating-system support and available ports; an adapter cannot fix a remote game-server fault.
