Compare split and combined sale baskets

Black Friday baskets: split the order or buy together?

The cheapest individual prices do not always produce the cheapest order. Splitting a Black Friday list between two shops can add delivery twice. Buying everything together can qualify for a threshold, but only if the discount still applies and the extra items were already on your list.

Use the comparison below when you have two or more purchases ready to make. It does not set target prices or tell you to wait for a sale. It helps you choose between actual baskets containing the same wanted items, with promotional conditions recorded before you pay.

Fix the shopping list before comparing baskets

Write down each exact model, size, colour and quantity. Separate the items you need now from optional purchases. Two baskets are comparable only when they solve the same need; a different size or a missing accessory can turn an apparent saving into a second purchase.

Use the same delivery destination and a realistic delivery method. A collection price is only useful if you can collect during the available hours. Record a genuine cost for a special journey if it affects your decision. Keep assumptions visible rather than quietly treating one shop’s premium delivery and another shop’s slowest service as equivalent.

Read how the threshold is actually calculated

Look for whether the retailer calculates free delivery before or after discounts, whether particular goods are excluded, and whether separate sellers or parcels have their own fees. If the wording is unclear, check the basket and the retailer’s delivery information. Do not borrow a threshold from an old banner or another country’s store.

Enter a permitted code and recalculate the total. A voucher may reduce the goods value below the delivery threshold. Another promotion may not combine at all. Capture the accepted result while the basket is still available, including any postcode restrictions. An advertised percentage is not the figure you are comparing; the amount payable is.

Use a like-for-like total for each route

The fictional example uses two wanted items priced at £32 and £24 in one shop. Its delivery is £4 under a hypothetical £60 threshold. Together they cost £60 delivered. A second route buys the first item for £29 and the second for £22 from separate shops, each charging £4 delivery, for £59 delivered. Splitting saves £1 in this example, not the £5 shown by adding item-price differences alone.

Now imagine adding an unwanted £6 item to the first basket to reach free delivery. The payment becomes £62, which is £2 more than paying that shop’s delivery and £3 more than the split route. If the £6 item was already a planned purchase, compare the expanded shopping list on both routes. A threshold is a condition, not a reason to invent a need.

Keep the decision usable if stock or a code changes

Compare the same set of wanted goods again if one goes out of stock. Do not keep an expensive leftover order simply because the original split looked attractive. Note any delivery deadline you cannot miss, then check the chosen route meets it before paying.

Keep the order confirmations separately if you split the purchase. Each retailer has its own contact and return process, which can add effort even when the monetary saving is real. Where the difference is small, you can reasonably value a simpler order, but record that preference honestly. Do not describe convenience as a cash saving.
