Choose a dish rack that drains into your sink

A dish rack should return drips to the sink without covering the working area you need for food preparation. Measure the drainer and the sink edge, then compare the rack's full footprint with its spout fitted. Capacity alone won't tell you whether the water has somewhere useful to go.

Before shopping, arrange a typical washed load on your existing drainer. Include the largest plate and the mugs you use most often. Notice what tips, what touches the wall and where puddles collect. This gives you specific faults to solve instead of a vague wish for a bigger rack.

Measure the whole draining arrangement

Record the clear width and depth of the drainer, leaving room for taps and any raised sink rim. Check the product drawing for feet, handles and projecting cutlery holders. A headline width may exclude an adjustable section or a spout shown only in the photographs.

Look at the direction of drainage. Some racks have a fixed outlet; others allow a choice of positions. Confirm that the outlet reaches the sink without lifting the rack or balancing it on an improvised support. If your drainer slopes in a different direction, choose a design intended to work with that surface rather than hoping the water will find its way.

Test your awkward crockery first

Measure the diameter of your largest everyday plates and check the slot arrangement. Deep bowls may occupy several slots. Wide mug handles can prevent neighbouring cups from sitting properly, even when the advertised place-setting count looks generous.

Look for a clear loading diagram or ask the retailer about the dimensions that matter. Keep tall or heavy items within the manufacturer's guidance. A rack that takes most of your ordinary load with stable spacing can be more useful than a large design whose extra tier is unsuitable for the crockery you own. Leave the sink and surrounding worktop usable while dishes drain.

Inspect the parts you will clean

A draining tray needs cleaning as well as the dishes above it. Check whether the tray slides out and whether the spout can be removed without tools. Look at narrow channels and joints where residue may collect. Read the care instructions for each component; dishwasher suitability can differ between parts.

If a cutlery cup is detachable, check its drain holes and how it reconnects. Make sure small utensils cannot fall through onto the worktop unnoticed. Choose a cleaning routine that you can carry out without dismantling half the kitchen. Claims about a coating do not remove the need to follow the manufacturer's cleaning guidance.

Compare the rack in its normal position

On arrival, check the assembled dimensions before filling the rack. Follow its setup instructions, then observe a small normal load. Water should travel along the intended route without spilling across the preparation area. Check that feet sit evenly and that removing a plate doesn't pull the rack towards the sink.

Keep any adjusters within their designed range. If the layout fails, record the actual measurement that caused the problem before choosing a replacement. The best shortlist contains racks that fit your sink and crockery together. Extra capacity is only useful after the drainage, stability and cleaning access have been settled.
