Choose a kitchen bin with room for the lid

Measure a kitchen bin with its lid open before deciding where it will go. The closed dimensions can hide the clearance needed beneath a worktop, and a pedal may project into a walkway. Start with the space and the waste routine, then compare capacity among the bins that genuinely fit.

Think about emptying as well as filling. You need room to lift the inner bucket or draw out the bag without scraping cupboards. If the current bin is inconvenient, write down the exact nuisance: a lid hitting the wall, liners slipping or a bucket that catches. Each problem needs a different check.

Draw the working footprint

Mark the proposed position on a sketch of the kitchen. Include the open lid and the space your foot needs at the pedal. Look for dimensions in the assembly instructions, because the product listing may show only the closed body. Allow normal access to nearby drawers and appliances.

A narrow bin can still be too deep for a shallow recess. Check the skirting board and any pipework rather than measuring only the clear wall above them. Avoid placing a bin where opening it would force someone into the room's main walking route. A door-mounted model also needs the cabinet maker's load and fixing guidance.

Match capacity to your emptying pattern

Count how often you currently empty the bin and what fills it. Separate recycling arrangements may reduce the amount of general waste you need to store. A larger capacity isn't automatically better if a partly filled bag sits longer than you want or becomes difficult to lift.

For divided bins, compare the capacity of each compartment instead of the total. Check whether each bucket comes out separately and whether ordinary liners fit. Where a manufacturer specifies a particular liner, include its continuing cost and availability. Keep the liner dimensions with your shopping note so that future purchases don't depend on remembering a brand code.

Inspect the surfaces you will wipe

Look at the underside of the lid, the hinge area and the join around the pedal. Read the cleaning instructions for coatings and any electronic components. A sensor-operated bin needs its battery or charging requirements included in the decision, along with a way to open it as instructed when power is unavailable.

Check whether the inner bucket has a handle and whether that handle lies flat when the bin is closed. A washable bucket still needs somewhere to dry. Avoid assumptions about dishwasher cleaning; confirm it for the exact removable part. The outside finish matters less if reaching the inside is awkward every week.

Try the emptying movement before committing

When the bin arrives, follow the setup instructions and test it empty in the intended position. Open the lid fully and lift the bucket along its actual route. Check that the wall isn't struck and the pedal returns correctly. Don't force a lid under a worktop to make the dimensions work.

Inspect for transit damage and keep the packaging until the fit is settled. If you choose a smaller model, plan the emptying routine around it. Your aim is a bin that opens, cleans and empties without disrupting the kitchen. Once those jobs are easy, appearance and optional features can decide between the remaining choices.
