Choose a measuring jug with readable markings

Choose a measuring jug by the markings you can read at your working position and the way it pours into your usual bowls. Check the units, maximum working capacity and permitted uses. A large printed capacity is less helpful if the smaller quantities you regularly measure are hard to distinguish.

Put your existing jug on the worktop and notice what makes you bend or guess. Perhaps the handle sits over the scale, the markings fade or the spout dribbles against a narrow bottle. These observations make a useful shopping brief. They also help you avoid buying another jug with exactly the same limitations.

Read the scale before judging the size

Look for the units used in your recipes. Millilitres and litres are not the same scale as fluid ounces, and a cup scale needs its definition checked rather than assumed. Choose markings that are clear for the quantities you actually measure.

Examine the spacing between graduations. A jug designed for large batches may be awkward for a small amount, even if the total capacity is generous. Product photographs can hide low-contrast printing, so seek a close view or inspect a display sample. Follow the manufacturer's directions on where to view the scale and how to take a reading. A decorative jug is not automatically a measuring instrument.

Check working space around the handle

Measure the cupboard opening and the height beneath any shelf where you plan to use the jug. Include the handle and spout in the footprint. A broad base can improve convenience on one worktop while taking too much room in a small storage cupboard.

Consider your normal receiving container. A wide mixing bowl tolerates a different pouring position from a small bottle. Look at the spout shape and the clearance your hand needs. Don't test pouring with hot contents simply to assess the design. Start with an ordinary cold-water check where appropriate and follow all instructions for use with heated liquids.

Confirm material and temperature limits

Read the product instructions for microwave, dishwasher and hot-liquid suitability. These are separate claims. A jug may support one use without supporting another, and an attached lid can have different restrictions from the main body. Check the exact component details rather than relying on a material name.

Inspect markings for advice about maximum fill levels or heating limits. Avoid sudden temperature changes unless the manufacturer explicitly permits them. If you need a jug mainly for food preparation, confirm that intended use. Don't repurpose a workshop measuring container for food because it happens to have a convenient scale.

Plan cleaning and replacement

Check whether you can reach the inside corners and the underside of any lid. Read the advice for protecting printed markings during cleaning. A jug that becomes unreadable has lost the feature you bought it for, even if the body remains intact.

Compare one appropriate jug with a set only if you have a use and storage position for each size. On delivery, check the markings and inspect for damage before use. Keep the model information with the instructions. A useful jug gives you an unambiguous reading and a controllable pour at the quantities you use; extra capacity can remain a secondary consideration.
