Choose a shower curtain around hooks and hem clearance
A shower curtain needs to hang freely, keep water where it belongs and come off without a wrestling match on laundry day. Before ordering, measure the rail and the drop to the intended hem position. Check the hook arrangement too. A curtain that matches the room colour can still be awkward to use.
Start with the curtain you already own, if there is one. Note where it catches, whether the edges reach far enough and how the bottom behaves during a shower. Those observations give you a better shopping brief than copying a product photograph. Keep the manufacturer's care instructions beside the measurements.

Measure from the hanging point
Measure from where the curtain actually hangs on the hook, rather than from the ceiling or top of the rail. Different hooks can alter the finished drop. Compare that measurement with the curtain's stated length and any instructions about where the hem should sit in your particular shower arrangement.
Width needs its own check. A curtain drawn completely flat may have little spare material at the sides. Look at the maker's guidance on overlap and fullness, then measure your opening accordingly. If the listing gives only a pack size, ask for the finished fabric dimensions before buying. Don't assume every curtain described as standard is identical.
Check the holes and hooks together
Count the hanging points and compare their spacing with your rail setup. Some curtains include hooks; others leave you to choose them. Check what is in the pack and whether the hooks can pass along your rail without catching on a join or bracket.
Look at how the curtain is removed. Closed rings may require the rail to come down, while some designs open individually. Choose a method you can manage without stretching or climbing on unsuitable furniture. If the existing rail is loose or damaged, deal with that separately before adding a new curtain. The fabric cannot correct a mounting problem.
Plan washing and drying before choosing fabric
Read the care label, including the drying instructions. A washable curtain still needs a practical place to dry, and decorative trims may have different handling requirements from the main panel. GINETEX's care-symbol guide can help you interpret unfamiliar label symbols; the exact product instructions remain the starting point.
Ask whether the curtain requires a separate liner. Include that liner and any replacement hooks in the comparison. If the listing shows a layered arrangement, check whether every visible layer is supplied. Keep a note of the model so that finding another compatible liner later does not depend on recognising a tiny photograph.
Check the first fit without forcing anything
Before removing labels or using the shower, hang the curtain according to its instructions and slide it across the opening. Look for snagging hooks and an uneven hem. Check that it does not obstruct normal access or trail across a walking surface.
Keep the packaging until you have checked the supplied parts and dimensions. If the curtain is the wrong size, use the retailer's stated process rather than cutting or altering it immediately. Your useful result is a curtain that fits the opening and your cleaning routine. An extra decorative layer is optional; reliable everyday handling is what earns the purchase its place.
