Choose furniture felt pads by leg shape and floor care

Choose furniture pads around the leg shape and the floor manufacturer's care advice. Check the pad's intended surfaces and fitting method before assuming it will protect a particular finish. A small square of felt won't correct an unstable chair or make a heavy item safe for one person to move.

Look at the underside of the furniture before shopping, using a safe method and help where needed. Note existing feet, worn glides and uneven contact points. If the floor has already been marked, understand the cause first. Grit trapped beneath a pad or a loose furniture leg needs a different response from simply adding another layer.

Measure the complete contact area

Record the shape and dimensions of each foot that touches the floor. Tapered or angled legs may have a smaller contact area than the leg appears to have from above. Check the pad manufacturer's sizing guidance and avoid a fit that leaves adhesive or an edge protruding beyond the foot.

For tubular furniture legs, a cap or a specified replacement glide may be more appropriate than an adhesive pad. Check the furniture maker's parts information. Don't drill or hammer a fitting into a leg unless the furniture and pad instructions support that method. The right attachment should suit the construction rather than depending on force to stay in place.

Check both materials for compatibility

Read the floor care guidance and the pad's permitted uses. Felt, rubber and plastic glides behave differently, so choose the type specified for the situation. A product described as suitable for furniture isn't automatically suitable for every floor finish.

If the furniture sits on a rug part of the time and a hard floor at other times, consider both positions. Don't use pads to bypass a requirement for a different support arrangement. Ask the floor supplier if the guidance is unclear. Keep any testing or inspection within the manufacturer's recommendations, and remember that an initial lack of marks doesn't guarantee long-term compatibility under repeated movement.

Prepare and fit as instructed

Follow the pad's surface-preparation instructions and any waiting time before loading. Remove old residue only with a method suitable for the furniture material. Don't layer new adhesive pads over loose or contaminated ones, and don't mix attachment methods unless the maker permits it.

Check that all feet remain level after fitting. If a chair rocks, investigate the furniture and floor rather than stacking extra pads as an improvised repair. Arrange help for moving heavy items and avoid trapping fingers while inspecting feet. The pad is one part of the furniture's contact with the floor, not a lifting or stabilising device.

Make inspection part of the routine

Check pads periodically for wear, trapped dirt and movement, following the product guidance. Chairs that move frequently may need different attention from a cabinet that stays in place. Keep spare pads identified by size so you don't fit a nearly matching replacement later.

Compare pack quantity against the actual number of feet, including any different sizes on the same item. On delivery, check the supplied dimensions before fitting. A useful purchase has compatible material, a secure approved attachment and an inspection routine. Buying the largest mixed pack is less helpful if most pieces don't match the furniture you need to protect.
