Choose reusable gift bags by base size and handles
Measure a gift's complete box before choosing a reusable gift bag. Check the bag's base depth and handle arrangement as well as its height. A tall bag can still be too narrow for a broad box, and a decorative handle is not proof that the bag is suitable for carrying a heavy present.
Use a bag you already own if it fits and is in suitable condition. Reuse works best when the recipient can actually use the bag again, so choose an ordinary size and design where possible. There is no need to add layers of filler simply because the product photograph shows an elaborate presentation.

Measure the wrapped item, not the product alone
Include any protective box or wrapping that needs to stay with the gift. Measure width, depth and height with the item in its intended orientation. Compare those figures with the bag's usable internal measurements rather than assuming that the listed size describes the base.
Allow the opening method the product needs. A drawstring bag may lose some usable height when closed, while a rigid bag may not flex around a protruding corner. Don't force a gift into an opening that is too small. For fragile items, use suitable protective packaging rather than expecting a soft gift bag to provide impact protection on its own.
Check carrying requirements separately
Read any stated load limit and inspect the handle construction. Consider the complete weight of the gift and its packaging. If the bag is intended mainly for presentation, carry the item by an appropriate outer container and place it in the decorative bag at the destination.
A longer handle isn't automatically easier for every person to use. Check whether the bag would trail or swing awkwardly when carried. Keep any cords or small decorative attachments away from people for whom they could be a hazard, following the product warnings. Choose a simple arrangement that suits the journey rather than adding handles and ties only for appearance.
Choose a closure that supports reuse
Look at how the recipient will open the bag. A reusable tie or fold can be more convenient than a closure that needs cutting, but check that it still suits the contents. Don't use permanent adhesive across a fabric opening if you want the bag to be used again.
Read the care instructions if you expect the bag to be washed. A fabric appearance doesn't establish machine-wash suitability, particularly where there is a coating, printed panel or attached decoration. Keep the material information with the product if helpful. Choose labels or tags that can be removed without damaging the bag or leaving the recipient's private information attached for the next use.
Avoid buying an oversized stash
Count the gifts you actually need to present and reuse available bags first. A mixed-size pack is useful only if the sizes fit likely items and you have somewhere to store them. Check the number of usable bags rather than treating tissue paper and tags as equivalent pieces in a bundle.
On delivery, inspect seams, the base and handles before filling. Keep a small bag folded where it won't be crushed or forgotten. Ask the recipient if they would prefer you to take it back for another use. The useful purchase fits the gift and a realistic reuse plan. A large collection of unused presentation bags hasn't solved a packing problem merely by matching in colour.
