Compare Online Glasses by Prescription, Fit and Total Cost

A low frame price is only the start of an online glasses order. The usable result also depends on a current prescription, appropriate dispensing measurements, lens options, frame fit and what happens if the finished spectacles are not right. Those costs and responsibilities can differ even when two frames look almost identical.

Use this guide to build a complete comparison before entering payment details. It is not an eye examination and it does not decide whether remote ordering is appropriate for a particular prescription. Complex prescriptions, children and people registered as sight impaired can involve additional professional or legal requirements, so ask a registered practitioner when the route is unclear.

Start with the prescription and dispensing route

Check that the prescription is current and that you understand whether it is for distance, near, occupational or another specific use. Copy the values carefully and do not convert signs or units yourself. The College of Optometrists notes that pupillary distance is a facial dispensing measurement rather than part of the prescription, which is why it may not appear on the paper you received after a sight test.

Ask how the seller obtains the measurements needed for the chosen lens type and who checks the finished spectacles. For a strong, unusual or multifocal prescription, compare the online process with in-person dispensing before using a coupon. A discount does not reduce the importance of the optical centres, fitting height, frame position or follow-up route.

Price the lenses you need, not the default frame

Put the frame, prescription lenses and every required option on one line. Separate optional coatings or thinning from features actually recommended for the prescription. Do not count a crossed-out upgrade price as a saving without independent price history. Record currency, taxes and delivery, especially when the seller's primary market is outside the UK.

Ignore add-ons that do not solve a stated need. The College of Optometrists says the best available evidence does not support blue-light filtering spectacles for the general population to improve sleep or preserve macular health. That does not decide every individual case, but it is a reason to ask what problem an extra-cost coating is supposed to solve.

Compare frame measurements with a pair that fits

Use a comfortable existing frame as a reference. Record lens width, bridge width and temple length from its markings, then compare the new frame's stated dimensions. The numbers do not guarantee comfort because shape, hinge position, nose support and material matter, but they are more useful than a virtual image alone.

Check the seller's adjustment route. Ask whether a local optician would charge to adjust a frame bought elsewhere, and whether adjustment could affect a return. If the site offers virtual try-on, treat it as a style aid rather than a verified dispensing measurement. Save the exact frame model and size selected.

Read remake, return and support terms before ordering

Prescription lenses may be made to order, so ordinary change-of-mind assumptions may not apply in the same way as for an unused stock item. Read the seller's policy for input errors, manufacturing errors, non-tolerance, damaged delivery and frame adjustment. Record who pays return postage and where a return must be sent.

Make the decision from the final delivered total, measurement method, suitability for the prescription and remedy if the glasses are unusable. Keep the prescription, order specification and correspondence together. Seek urgent professional advice for sudden vision changes or eye symptoms rather than trying to solve them through a retail order.
