Clothing fit
Choose a Dress When Your Measurements Span Sizes
If your bust, waist and hip measurements fall into different sizes, the most useful question is which part of the dress actually controls the fit. A fitted shift, a full-skirted dress and an adjustable wrap do not use their available space in the same way. Start with construction before choosing a label.
A size chart describes a reference body or garment; it does not guarantee that every shape in a collection will suit the same person. This guide helps you recognise promising cuts, prepare useful measurements and decide whether a small alteration is realistic without depending on it to rescue an unsuitable dress.

Identify the areas with the least flexibility
Read the description and inspect front, back and side photographs. Note a fixed waistband, fitted bust seams, a narrow hip line, lining and the position of the zip. Those areas can restrict fit even if the outer skirt looks generous. A wrap detail may be decorative rather than adjustable, so check how it actually fastens. Look for separate fabric information for the lining because stretch in the outer layer does not mean the whole dress stretches. Write down your bust, waist and hip figures using the maker’s method. Boden’s guide separates these measurements and front length, which is a useful reminder to check proportions as well as circumference.
Choose a shape before forcing a size compromise
For a dress fitted through the hips, make sure that area has suitable room before judging whether the waist can be adjusted. For a dress with a full skirt, the bodice may be the more important limit. Try sitting, reaching and walking rather than relying on the garment closing successfully. Watch for seams being pulled out of position, buttons separating or a neckline that changes shape when you move. If a larger size solves one area while making the shoulders or armholes clearly unsuitable, try a different cut. A dress that requires several structural changes is a different purchase proposition from one needing a straightforward hem adjustment.
Check length and closures in ordinary use
Measure front length according to the seller’s stated starting point and compare it with a dress whose hem position you understand. Torso length also matters: a waist seam that sits too high or low can make the skirt hang differently even when the total length seems right. Put on the intended undergarments and shoes during the fitting. Check whether you can operate the zip, buttons or ties without impractical assistance, particularly if you will wear the dress regularly. Sit down and stand up again to assess coverage and whether the fabric settles naturally. A photograph of a standing model cannot answer those practical questions for your body.
Make alterations a defined decision
If you like the dress apart from one specific detail, obtain alteration advice before removing labels or authorising work. Explain the exact change and ask whether seams, pockets, lining or decorative placement complicate it. Do not assume that taking in a waist is always easy or that letting out fabric is possible. Compare the combined purchase and alteration cost with another dress that already fits. Read the care label and consider whether the garment will be convenient for its intended frequency of wear. Keep a record of the shape, measurements and features that worked, so the next search starts from useful evidence about your preferences rather than a single size number.
Check whether the dress has pockets and try them empty first, then with only the small item you would normally carry. A pocket opening can affect how a fitted skirt hangs, so include that detail in the movement check rather than discovering it after alteration.
