Bakeware sizing

Measure a baking tray for a small oven

A baking tray's advertised width does not always include its rolled edges or handles. In a small oven, those details can decide whether the door closes and whether you can remove the tray comfortably. The right purchase starts with the oven's usable shelf space and the food you intend to bake.

Measure only when the oven is completely cool. Take out a shelf if the appliance instructions permit, then record the space available with it correctly refitted. Do not assume that the full width of the oven cavity is an acceptable tray size: airflow and shelf support also need attention.

Record three different measurements

Write down the maximum external tray dimensions allowed by your oven instructions, the dimensions of a shelf that already fits, and the internal cooking area you need. Keep those three figures separate. The first protects compatibility, the second gives you a useful comparison, and the third tells you whether the batch will fit. Check handles, lips and the highest edge as well as width and depth. A tray that enters only when tilted may be difficult to remove level with hot food on it. For a compact oven with a supplied tray, check whether replacements must use the original rail arrangement. Do not place an improvised tray directly on the oven floor unless the appliance explicitly permits that use.

Match depth to the food

For biscuits or a flat pastry, you may value an accessible shallow edge. For vegetables or a dish that releases liquid, a deeper tray may be more practical. Consider how you will turn or lift the food and whether the utensil reaches the corners. IKEA's bakeware range shows why internal depth and external dimensions deserve separate checks; a product called a baking dish may perform a different job from a shallow sheet. Make a paper outline of the usable base and compare it with the portions you normally arrange. Leave whatever spacing the recipe needs. Buying a tray that fits the oven but compresses every batch simply moves the problem from the cupboard into the cooking process.

Read the heat and cleaning limits

Confirm the tray's stated oven temperature limit and any restrictions involving grills, hobs or sudden temperature changes. Follow the instructions for the specific material rather than transferring rules from a different tray. Non-stick coatings, enamel, metal and glass can have different care requirements. IKEA's cookware care guidance provides general questions to ask, while the delivered product instructions remain decisive. Check whether dishwasher use is allowed and whether the tray physically fits without obstructing spray arms. If hand washing is required, make sure you can reach its corners in your sink. Avoid buying an awkward oversized tray on the assumption that it will somehow become easier to clean after cooking.

Plan removal, cooling and storage

Practise the route from the cold oven to a stable heat-resistant resting place using an empty tray of comparable size. Include the door's position and the room needed for both hands in suitable oven gloves. For a small kitchen, the landing space may be a more meaningful constraint than oven capacity. Decide where the tray will cool before you need the worktop for another task. For storage, compare upright slots with nesting and protect surfaces as the manufacturer recommends. Check the order for whether a rack or lid is included; do not count accessories shown only in serving photographs. Keep the packaging until you have checked the fit while everything is cold and before food contact changes the retailer's return options.

Your next steps

  • Compare external and internal dimensions.
  • Allow the oven clearances in its manual.
  • Match depth to the actual dish.
  • Check a safe landing place before buying.
