Prepare a Winter Car Emergency Kit Without Overpacking
A winter car kit is useful only if the torch works, the warm layer fits the passenger and the scraper is not buried beneath luggage. Copying a long generic list can fill the boot while missing the item needed for the actual route.
Build the kit in two layers: items that stay in the vehicle and journey-specific additions chosen after checking the forecast. The aim is to support a safe wait for help, maintain visibility and contact assistance, not to encourage driving into conditions that should be avoided.

Start with the route and the people
Note the journey length, road type, mobile coverage gaps and the age, mobility and medical needs of every passenger. A short urban trip needs a different food, warmth and medication plan from a rural journey at night. Check the Met Office warnings and road information before departure; a kit does not make a severe route safe.
Keep emergency medication with the person who needs it, following its storage instructions. Add warm layers sized for the passengers and a small supply of water and suitable food for the planned trip. Check dates and replace anything that has been opened, damaged or affected by heat in the vehicle.
Protect visibility and communication
Carry a scraper and suitable de-icer, and keep the windscreen wash topped up with a product mixed for the expected temperature. The Met Office states that front and rear windscreens must be clear of snow and ice before driving. Clear lights and number plates as well, following the vehicle handbook.
Pack a charged torch that does not depend on the car battery, plus spare batteries if required. Keep an in-car phone charger and a written list of breakdown and insurance numbers. A paper route reference can still help if the phone has no signal or power.
Store the kit where it can be reached
Place the core kit in a secured bag that cannot become a projectile in sudden braking. If the boot may be inaccessible after a collision, keep essential contact and warmth items in a safe cabin storage area permitted by the vehicle handbook. Do not block pedals, airbags, visibility or emergency exits.
Label the bag and show regular drivers where it is. Keep a high-visibility garment accessible before anyone leaves the vehicle, but follow current road-safety advice about whether it is safer to remain inside or move behind a barrier. Never stand between traffic and the vehicle.
Check the vehicle as well as the bag
A kit does not replace tyre, battery, light, fuel or screen-wash checks. Review the handbook for tyre pressures and any repair kit, and make sure the breakdown cover matches the vehicle and intended journey. Charge an electric vehicle with enough reserve for cold-weather conditions and diversions.
Set a monthly winter reminder to test the torch, recharge power banks and inspect the scraper, clothing and food. Remove seasonal items when they are no longer needed so the next review remains quick. Buy only the gaps found by this check rather than a pre-packed bundle with unknown quality.
Your next steps
- Check forecast and road conditions before leaving; change the journey when warnings require it.
- Keep light, warmth, communication and visibility items reachable without unloading the boot.
- Review batteries, dates and passenger needs every month during winter.
