Keep an assignment version log without losing the submitted file
Give an assignment one clear working location and a simple version log before you begin substantial editing. Record which file you submitted and keep the submission confirmation separately. Follow your institution's file-naming and submission rules; an orderly folder helps you manage the task but doesn't establish that the correct work has been accepted.
Start with the assignment brief and the system you are required to use. Note the deadline, required format and any naming convention. Then choose a routine you can keep during a busy week. A complicated numbering system is less useful than a small set of filenames whose meaning you will still understand tomorrow.

Separate working drafts from the submission copy
Create an appropriate folder in a storage location permitted by your institution. Use the required naming format where one is supplied. Otherwise, choose names that identify the module and task without exposing unnecessary personal information, then keep the wording consistent.
Decide how you will distinguish a working draft from a candidate submission. Avoid several files called final with different punctuation. A short dated note can explain which draft contains the latest revision. Don't delete earlier work in haste when making that distinction. Check storage and version-history arrangements so that reorganising the folder doesn't remove the only copy of material you still need.
Record decisions rather than every keystroke
Keep a brief log beside the assignment. Note the date, the file you worked on and a meaningful change, such as revised evidence in section two. You don't need to describe every spelling correction. The log should help you resume the argument rather than become another assignment.
If feedback or a tutorial changes your plan, record the relevant point in your own words and where the original feedback is held. Keep confidential or personal information out of any shared log. For group work, agree the editing and ownership rules before several people create competing copies. Use the institution's approved collaboration tools and permissions instead of exchanging uncontrolled attachments whenever someone makes a small change.
Check the exported file independently
When the draft is ready, export or save it in the required format. Open that resulting file in a suitable viewer and inspect the pages, tables and references. Don't assume the export matches the editable document simply because it has the right filename.
Check that the complete file is present and that any required attachments are included under the submission instructions. If a file won't open, resolve that before the deadline rather than renaming its extension. Use your institution's support route when needed. Keep the editable draft and the exported copy distinct so that a last-minute correction doesn't leave you unsure which file you are about to upload.
Preserve evidence of the actual submission
Follow the submission platform's process and check its confirmation or receipt. Record the submitted filename and time in your log, keeping the confirmation in the permitted storage location. A file sitting in your folder is not proof that the platform received it.
If resubmission is allowed and needed, follow the current rules and retain the new confirmation. Don't assume a second upload replaces the first in every system. Keep feedback beside the record when it arrives. The useful result is a traceable path from working draft to the file actually submitted, with enough information to understand the process later without opening every document in the folder.
