Trouser fit
Choose trouser length around the shoes you actually wear at university
Trousers that look the right length in a product photograph can sit very differently over your own shoes. Before term becomes busy, check the combination you will actually wear and decide whether a different length, another cut or an alteration would solve the problem most directly.
The aim is a usable fit for your preferences, not a universal rule about where every hem should fall. Nike's bottoms guide illustrates the role of product-specific sizing, while Timpson explains that clothing alterations are assessed before a quote is given. Neither replaces trying your own combination.

Settle where the trousers sit first
Put the waistband where you intend to wear it and fasten the trousers normally. If you plan to use a belt, include it in the check rather than holding the waistband at an artificial height. A pair that repeatedly slips or pulls may have a fit issue that changing the hem will not solve. Sit down, stand up and move in the ordinary ways your university day requires. Notice whether the waistband position remains acceptable. Make the length decision only after that basic fit is settled, otherwise a later adjustment elsewhere can change where the hem meets the shoe.
Compare the shoes that matter most
Try the trousers with the two or three pairs you genuinely use, rather than an imagined future shoe purchase. Trainers, boots and flatter shoes can change how fabric falls around the foot. Look from the front, side and back, using a mirror or a photograph if that helps you see the result. Focus on whether the fabric drags, bunches in a way you dislike or catches when you move. Your preferred appearance is part of the decision. There is no need to force one trouser length to work equally well with every shoe if you normally wear only one combination.
Separate length from the shape of the leg
A wide opening may fall around a shoe differently from a narrow one even when the inside-leg measurement is similar. If you dislike the whole lower-leg shape, shortening alone may not create the result you want. Compare another cut before arranging work on a pair you have not committed to keeping. Check the product information for available length options, using the relevant chart rather than assuming short, regular and long mean the same across retailers. For an existing pair, describe the problem in practical terms to the alteration service. Showing the unwanted bunching is clearer than guessing a number to remove.
Ask what the alteration would involve
Bring the intended shoes and any belt to a fitting if the service asks you to do so. Explain the finish you want and ask whether the construction allows it, including any detail at the hem that you hope to preserve. Obtain the quoted cost and expected completion arrangement before authorising the work. This is especially useful when an inexpensive second-hand pair would need several changes. Do not cut fabric or make permanent changes simply to test a possible length. A professional can explain how they will mark the garment and what decisions you need to make before the work begins.
Check the result as a complete outfit
When collecting altered trousers, confirm the agreed work and try them with the same shoes and waistband arrangement used at the fitting where practical. Walk and sit normally instead of judging only a static pose. Keep the finished measurement or service note if it will help with a future pair, while remembering that a different cut can behave differently. If the original trousers already work with your usual shoes, no alteration or purchase is needed. The useful result is knowing which combinations are dependable, so a rushed morning does not reveal a fit problem that was hidden in the changing room.
Your next steps
- Try the trousers with your usual shoes.
- Check the waist position before judging length.
- Ask about alteration feasibility before committing.
- Keep any agreed finished length in writing.
