USB-C chargers: check power, device and cable together

Choose a USB-C charger by your device's documented power requirements and a suitable cable, not connector shape alone.

Find the charging specification for the exact laptop, tablet or phone. Record the required charging standard and power guidance. Two chargers with the same USB-C socket can support different outputs and intended uses.

Check the complete combination

Use the device manufacturer's recommended or explicitly compatible charger and cable arrangements. Check both total output and output per port, particularly on multi-port chargers. Connecting another device can change how available power is shared.

A cable must support the intended charging use too. Avoid unidentified or damaged cables and do not assume a thin cable included with a small accessory is suitable for a laptop.

Diagnose a charging problem safely

Check for obvious cable damage and whether the correct port is being used. Try a known-good approved combination if available. If a device, battery or charger is swollen, damaged, unusually hot or smells burnt, stop using it and obtain appropriate service advice.

Do not open chargers, modify connectors or defeat a device's charging restrictions. For work equipment, use the organisation's supplied or approved accessories.

Before ordering

  • Confirm the exact device's charging requirements.
  • Check power sharing across the charger's ports.
  • Match the cable as well as the power adapter.
