Laptop storage is full: sort files without a risky cleaner

Identify what uses laptop storage and protect important files before deleting anything or buying another drive.

Use the operating system's built-in storage view to see broad categories. Save work and confirm backups before removing files. Do not delete unfamiliar system folders or run a third-party cleaning tool simply because it promises a large recovery figure.

Start with files you recognise

Review downloads, duplicate exports and large personal media files. Open or identify files before deciding they are unnecessary. Check whether course or work material must remain in an approved location.

Uninstall unwanted applications through the supported system method. Deleting their folders manually can leave problems behind. Empty recycle or trash storage only after confirming you no longer need its contents.

Understand cloud placeholders

A cloud-synced folder may offer an official option to keep a file online while removing its local copy. Read the provider's explanation first. Deleting the file can mean something different and may remove it from synced locations too.

If you move files to external storage, keep an appropriate backup. Moving the only copy does not make it safer, and the files will be unavailable when the drive is disconnected.

Before upgrading

  • Identify the largest relevant categories.
  • Remove only files or applications you understand.
  • Check backup and cloud behaviour before deleting.
