Back up your documents and test a restore

Create a document backup you can actually restore, with clear folders and an independent copy of important files.

List the folders you cannot easily recreate: coursework, photographs, project files and personal records. Decide which approved storage locations are appropriate. Work or university files must stay within your organisation's required systems and policies.

Confirm what is copied

Check the backup or sync application's settings and completed status. Do not assume every folder is included because an icon appears in the taskbar. Open the destination and inspect a few expected files.

Understand deletion and version behaviour. A synchronised folder can propagate changes, including accidental deletion. Read the provider's recovery guidance and keep an independent arrangement appropriate to the importance of the files.

Perform a small restore

Choose a non-sensitive sample and restore it to a temporary folder. Open it in the correct application and confirm its contents. This tests the recovery process without overwriting your working copy.

Keep account recovery methods up to date and protect them securely. A backup you cannot access after losing a device is not a complete recovery plan.

Monthly check

  • Verify expected folders and recent files are included.
  • Restore a sample without overwriting the original.
  • Check available capacity and account access.
