Choose a clothes rail for garment length and access
Measure your longest hanging garment and the available floor space before choosing a freestanding clothes rail. Include the hangers, base and the room needed to remove an item. Read the rail's load and assembly guidance; a generous-looking width does not tell you how much clothing it can safely support.
A rail can be useful while moving home or arranging a room without a wardrobe. Decide whether it will stay in one position or need moving regularly. Those are different requirements. The wheels and folding features shown in a listing need checking against the manufacturer's instructions for loaded and empty movement.

Measure from the hook to the hem
Hang your longest relevant item on the hanger you will use and measure its complete drop. Compare that with the rail's usable hanging height, allowing for the base or shelf below. The advertised overall height may include fittings that don't add hanging space.
Check depth too. Broad coat hangers need room on either side of the bar, and bulky clothing can project further than an empty hanger. Mark the footprint on a room sketch and open nearby doors. The rail should leave a clear route through the room and enough access to choose clothing without pulling it across another piece of furniture.
Read the load information precisely
Find the stated maximum load and any conditions attached to it. An adjustable rail may have different restrictions in different positions. Follow the guidance on distributing weight and don't assume that a lower shelf can carry whatever is left over after the bar is full.
Check whether the product needs anchoring or another safety measure. Use the supplied instructions and appropriate support for the surface, with permission where needed. Never treat a clothes rail as something to climb, lean on or use for support. If the product information doesn't explain its load and stability requirements, ask the supplier before selecting it for a full wardrobe.
Decide whether movement is genuinely necessary
Read whether the rail may be moved while loaded and how any castors lock. A product with wheels isn't automatically intended to travel across thresholds with clothing on it. Check the route, floor covering and storage position before counting mobility as an advantage.
If the rail will stay put, fixed feet may meet your needs with fewer moving parts. If it folds, confirm the folded dimensions and the steps needed to open it again. Don't store it where it can fall across a doorway. A feature only saves space when you have a suitable place for the folded rail and can operate it comfortably.
Plan assembly and the first loading
Read the assembly instructions before delivery and check the required tools and help. Count parts before starting. Follow the prescribed order and don't substitute missing fittings simply to finish quickly. If a joint or foot is damaged, contact the supplier before use.
Load gradually within the stated limits and check the arrangement as directed. Keep heavier items where the instructions specify. Compare price only among rails that fit the garments and room while meeting those requirements. A useful rail offers accessible hanging space in a stable, permitted arrangement. Extra width is less helpful when it encourages more weight than the product is designed to carry.
