Choose a doormat for a door with low clearance
A thick doormat can catch a door, curl at the edge or make a level entrance harder to use.
Choose the mat around the threshold and floor finish. Think about wet shoes and mobility aids as well as the pattern. An entrance mat needs to stay usable when it is dirty and needs cleaning.

Check the door swing
Measure clearance throughout the door’s arc, including any rising or falling floor. Check the mat’s full thickness and bound edge. Do not trim door seals or alter a fire door to accommodate a purchase; choose a suitable mat instead.
Separate outside scraping from inside absorption
Decide whether the mat is intended to remove mud outside or absorb moisture inside. Read its stated location and care instructions. An absorbent indoor mat may not suit standing rain, while a scraper may leave water on a smooth internal floor.
Check movement and edges
Assess whether the backing is compatible with your floor. Follow the floor manufacturer’s guidance where rubber or dyes could mark a surface. Look for an edge that remains flat and avoid layering mats to solve a clearance problem.
Plan cleaning and replacement
Check whether the mat can be shaken, washed or brushed and where you will dry it fully. Measure the washing-machine limit if washing is allowed. Compare replacement cost with the cleaning routine you will realistically maintain through wet weather.
