Choose a laundry basket for stairs and doorways
Choose a laundry basket by the journey it has to make when full. A wide basket may hold plenty but block your view on stairs or catch against a narrow doorway. Measure the route and try carrying your usual load in an existing container before deciding which shape to buy.
The empty basket in a shop tells only part of the story. Think about wet towels, protruding sleeves and where your hands sit under weight. If carrying laundry is difficult, a smaller load or help with the task may be more useful than a larger basket. There is no requirement to fill it.

Map the actual carrying route
Walk from the laundry collection point to the washing machine without carrying anything. Note tight turns, doors that swing towards you and places where you need a free hand. Measure the narrowest clear opening. Include the basket's handles in its overall width, because product dimensions sometimes describe only the body.
A tall basket and a broad shallow basket behave differently around a landing. Sketch both footprints on paper and compare them with the space available. Avoid testing an awkward load on stairs simply to prove it fits. Choose a manageable arrangement that leaves your route and view clear, and use the handrail where needed.
Compare handles under a realistic load
Check the stated load limit where the manufacturer provides one. Look at the handle opening and edge shape, then consider whether you normally carry with one hand or both. A handle that feels fine empty may press against your fingers when the basket is full.
If you can inspect the product in person, ask about an appropriate carrying demonstration. At home, test gradually within the instructions and your own comfortable capacity. Stop if the basket twists or the handles feel insecure. A shoulder bag style also needs a strap-length check: a low-hanging bag can strike your legs or drag when you bend to open a door.
Decide where each load waits
Separate the collection point from the carrying task. You might keep a fixed hamper in the bedroom and use a lighter carrier for trips to the machine. That avoids buying one large item expected to solve two different problems. Measure the cupboard or corner where the empty carrier will live.
Check whether ventilation openings will catch small items and whether the base can be wiped clean. For fabric baskets, read the washing and drying instructions rather than assuming the liner is removable. If you regularly carry damp laundry, check that the product is intended for that use and can dry properly between loads.
Make storage part of the purchase
A folding basket can save space, but find out its folded dimensions and how the mechanism locks open. Check for accessible pinch points when setting it up. A collapsible wall should not be relied on as a handle unless the manufacturer says it is one.
Compare the complete cost of the options that fit your route, including any liner sold separately. Keep the receipt and inspect seams or moulded handles before the first load. Once the basket is in use, adjust the amount you carry to the task. Being able to move the load comfortably matters more than matching the capacity printed in large type on the listing.
