Choose an external SSD for moving large files
An external SSD needs to work with the ports and file systems on both devices you will use.
Choose around a real transfer, such as moving a video project or a photo archive. Headline speed is only one part of the job; capacity, cables and a separate backup matter too.

Check the whole connection
Compare the drive interface, supplied cable and computer port. The slowest supported link can limit transfer performance. A connector adapter may change compatibility without providing the speed advertised for the drive.
Plan file-system compatibility
Check the operating systems involved and the file formats they support. Formatting can erase data, so back up first and follow the drive and system instructions. Do not reformat a work drive without its owner’s approval.
Leave working room
Estimate the project size and expected growth rather than filling a new drive immediately. Check any software or encryption requirements. Confirm how you will unlock the drive on the second device before depending on it during a deadline.
Keep another copy
Treat a portable drive as one copy, not automatic protection against loss. Test a copied file before removing its original through an authorised process. Store a separate backup and disconnect the drive using the operating system’s safe-removal guidance.
Your next steps
- Write down the requirement that matters most for external SSD before comparing listings.
- Confirm the exact item, total cost and delivery terms in the retailer basket.
