Choose curtains without blocking a radiator
Curtains need to fit the window treatment and the space below it. A floor-length pair may obstruct a radiator or collect behind furniture.
Measure from your actual rail or pole using the maker’s measuring instructions. Compare where the fabric will hang when open as well as when closed.

Identify the heading before measuring
Check whether the curtains use eyelets, hooks or another heading and where that system starts the drop. A measurement taken from the wrong point can change the finished position. Confirm whether quoted width is per panel or for the pair.
Leave heating equipment clear
Follow the radiator or heater’s clearance instructions and choose a suitable drop. Do not tuck fabric behind a heater or assume a decorative tieback solves the issue. If the window arrangement is awkward, consider a suitable blind or shorter treatment.
Check coverage and opening space
Allow the fullness recommended for the curtain heading and check where the gathered fabric will sit. A narrow pole may leave part of the window covered even when the curtains are open. Consider access to handles and ventilation controls.
Read lining and care details
Check whether lining is included and whether blackout wording describes the fabric or the complete installed result. Gaps can remain around the edges. Compare washing or cleaning requirements, especially where a heavy pair will be difficult to remove and rehang.
