Measure along the usable route

Use a tape or another safe measuring method to follow the intended hose route from the outlet to the furthest point. Include corners, changes in level and the space needed to position yourself without pulling the hose tightly across plants. Do not measure a straight line through a bed that the hose will never follow. Keep the route away from places where it could become a trip hazard, and avoid leaving it across shared access. Consider whether moving one container or using a watering can for a distant pot would remove the need for a much longer hose. Check the complete connection arrangement

Identify the outlet type and compare the hose, connectors and watering attachment using the manufacturers' stated compatibility. Similar colours or a general universal label are not enough to establish a secure fit. Check the hose diameter, connector size and any required adapters in the product instructions. Do not modify plumbing or improvise a connection that could contaminate a supply. Choose handling and storage together

A reel, trolley or wall-mounted system changes the space required and the way the hose is moved. Measure the storage footprint and check whether the handle can be turned without striking a wall or plant pot. If wall mounting is involved, follow the maker's fixing instructions and obtain competent help where wall construction or hidden services are uncertain. Check the instructions for winding, draining and seasonal storage. A lightweight hose may have different handling requirements from a conventional one, so read those before judging its convenience. Keep the hose clear of damage from sharp edges or vehicles. Do not use a storage format merely because it looks compact when the full hose cannot be returned easily after watering.

Plan water use and inspection

Use the hose to support appropriate watering based on the plants and conditions, rather than leaving water running while moving between tasks. Inspect fittings and the hose for damage or leaks as directed. RHS guidance on collecting and storing water includes precautions for hoses used with stored water, including avoiding unsuitable fine droplets and draining when appropriate. Follow that advice and the equipment instructions for your setup. Recheck the route after the first few uses and reposition storage if the hose repeatedly crosses a walkway.
