Compare belts using the maker’s measuring point

Belt sizes are useful only when you know where the manufacturer measures from.

Use an existing belt that fits as a reference and check the new belt’s sizing instructions. Waist size, total length and buckle-to-hole length are not interchangeable measurements.

Measure the working length

Lay a suitable belt flat and identify the hole you normally use. Follow the new maker’s measuring diagram. Do not include a buckle section unless the instructions say to; that can change the size you order.

Check belt-loop width

Measure the loops on the trousers you will wear. Compare belt width and buckle dimensions. A wide casual belt may not pass through a smarter trouser loop even when its length is right.

Read material and adjustment details

Check composition, lining and permitted shortening methods. Do not assume a cut-to-fit belt can be lengthened again after trimming. If adjustment needs tools, read the instructions before changing a product you may need to return.

Choose useful adjustment room

Allow the adjustment range you actually need without leaving an excessive tail. Check where a keeper will hold the end. Compare the delivered belt’s size and finish before wearing or altering it, particularly for personalised purchases.
