Find the full rating table on the manufacturer’s page, including the relevant model and size. Therm-a-Rest explains comfort, limit and extreme within its EN/ISO discussion; these labels should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions of an ordinary comfortable night. In particular, an extreme figure is not a comfortable-use target. Write the category beside each temperature in your shortlist. If one seller shows a comfort figure and another only a model name containing a number, obtain the missing information before comparing. Check whether the product uses a standardised test or another manufacturer-described assessment, and do not quietly assume the methods are equivalent.

Use conditions as a planning question

Establish the expected setting and seek appropriate advice about the conditions you could reasonably encounter, including overnight changes. Do not choose equipment solely from a daytime forecast or a season label. A bag described for three seasons does not create a universal temperature promise. If your experience with the expected conditions is limited, avoid selecting a bag right at a published boundary. Check length and usable width

Read the maximum user height and the actual bag dimensions, checking whether the available sizes differ in more than length. If trying the bag, use the seller’s permitted procedure and assess whether shoulders, hips and feet have suitable room without forcing the insulation flat. A very roomy rectangular bag and a close mummy shape offer different experiences. Try the zip and hood adjustments yourself if fitted. Consider whether you can enter and exit comfortably and whether the zip side matters in your shelter. Do not assume that adding unused length automatically improves the bag for you; choose dimensions that suit the person and the intended use.

Include the mat and the rest of the system

A sleeping bag is only one part of the arrangement. Check the mat’s insulation information and the assumptions stated in the bag’s rating guidance. An ordinary inflatable mattress and an insulated sleeping mat are not interchangeable simply because both lift you from the ground. Keep clothing and shelter decisions consistent with the advice for your trip rather than assigning all responsibility to the bag. Similar headline temperatures do not remove differences in how each product is intended to be used.

Check packed size and care before buying

Compare the packed size and weight for the exact length and model, including the supplied sack where relevant. A bag that suits car-based camping may be inconvenient in a small pack, while minimising packed size should not displace suitability for conditions. Read drying, cleaning and long-term storage instructions for the specific fill and construction. Consider whether you can follow those instructions after a damp trip. Keep a shortlist that records rating category, fit, packed dimensions and mat compatibility in separate columns. This makes a price comparison meaningful without turning a single temperature figure into a promise the manufacturer’s guidance does not make.
