Compare sketchbooks for the medium you plan to use

A sketchbook should suit the drawing or painting medium you plan to use, not only the page size.

Read the paper maker’s intended-use guidance. A high paper weight can be useful information, but it does not establish suitability for every wet or dry technique.

Choose the medium first

Check whether your project uses pencil, ink, watercolour or another material. Read the sketchbook’s supported uses and any preparation instructions. Do not assume paper described for drawing will accept heavy washes without changing.

Check texture and colour

Look at a sample where available and compare the surface with the marks you want to make. A smooth paper and a textured paper can serve different aims. Screen photographs may not show the surface clearly.

Compare binding and page handling

Decide whether pages need to lie flat, detach or remain bound. Check perforations and usable page area. A spiral can make folding easier while taking more room in a tightly packed bag.

Test before a larger project

Use a permitted sample or a non-critical page to try your actual materials. Keep drying and handling within their instructions. Choose a smaller book first if the paper behaviour is uncertain instead of committing an important project to an untested surface.

Make the next decision from your own setup

Before ordering, put the project instructions beside the materials you already own and identify the one missing requirement. Check dimensions or paper suitability against that actual project. Keep tools and substances within their own safety guidance. Buying one suitable item first is easier to assess than changing the entire working setup at once. Use these checks when comparing sketchbooks for the medium you plan to use.
