Small kitchen storage: make one work area usable

Organise a small kitchen by clearing one preparation area and measuring storage before buying organisers.

Remove everything from one crowded shelf and sort it by use. Keep frequent cooking tools together and move occasional baking equipment elsewhere if space allows. The aim is to make a normal meal easier, not to fit every possession within arm's reach.

Measure real usable space

Check internal shelf height, door hinges and drawer travel. Mark the footprint of a proposed organiser before ordering. An extra shelf is useful only if the items above and below can still be removed without awkward lifting.

Do not block ventilation around appliances or exceed shelf and organiser load limits. Keep heavy items in a practical position and store sharp tools safely.

Organise by a repeatable task

Put tea-making items together, or keep baking measures beside the mixing bowls. Use labels where similar containers hide different ingredients, retaining essential ingredient and allergy information. Do not decant products into containers that create identification or storage problems.

Keep a short list of what is actually missing. Buying several organisers before sorting can turn the same clutter into a collection of smaller inaccessible boxes.

Start with one improvement

  • Clear a usable preparation area.
  • Measure shelves and the items they must hold.
  • Test the arrangement for a week before expanding it.
