Shin pads for beginners: fit them with your match kit

Check size and coverage

Use the maker's size guide as a starting point, then check the actual pad dimensions. Height-based sizing is approximate: two players of similar height can prefer different shapes. The pad should provide suitable coverage without interfering with normal ankle and knee movement.

Ask the club or referee about required equipment if uncertain. Do not choose a tiny pad solely because it feels less noticeable, or assume an expensive pad automatically fits better. Protection claims should come from the product's documentation, not a seller's vague “professional” label.

Test retention indoors

Put on both pads, socks and boots. Walk, bend your knees and make gentle changes of direction on a safe indoor surface. Notice whether the pads rotate, slide or press on an edge. Retention sleeves and straps vary, so check whether they are included.

If you use sleeves, compare their measurements and care instructions. A sleeve that holds the pad securely but feels uncomfortably tight is not a good solution. Avoid modifying the pad to make it fit unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.

Keep them usable

After playing, inspect for cracks, damaged straps or sharp edges. Follow cleaning and drying instructions and store them outside a damp kit bag. Replace damaged equipment rather than covering a structural problem with tape.

• Try the complete kit together before match day.
• Check the pad stays in place through gentle movement.
• Inspect its shell and retaining parts after use.
