Use Cardboard Prototypes to Compare Design Iterations

A cardboard prototype is useful when it gives you a quick way to examine a design decision in three dimensions. It does not need a polished finish to show that an opening is awkwardly placed or two volumes compete. The key is knowing what each version is intended to test before you start making it.

Choose a narrow comparison

Select one feature to investigate, such as the position of a panel, the arrangement of compartments or the visual proportion of a base. Write what you expect to learn from the physical mock-up. A vague aim to improve the whole design makes it difficult to interpret why one version feels more successful.

Define what will remain similar between versions. If you change size, material, colour and assembly at once, you may not know which difference affected the judgement. Keep the comparison manageable enough to discuss within a studio tutorial and leave broader design changes for another clearly identified iteration.

Make only the detail required

The Design Museum describes prototyping as a way to move an idea into a physical form that can invite feedback. Use the minimum representation needed for your question. A compartment arrangement may not require a finished outer surface, while a visual proportion study may need a clear silhouette but no opening mechanism.

Label areas that are symbolic or incomplete. Do not let a rough hinge or flexible wall imply a performance you have not designed or assessed. If the concept requires load-bearing or other technical evaluation, ask the tutor for the appropriate method; a quick cardboard study should not be presented as proof of real-world suitability.

Identify versions as they are made

Give each mock-up a short version label and date, placed where it will not obscure the feature being discussed. Record the deliberate change on a small card. Avoid calling every object final, especially when several versions remain on the studio table and collaborators need to know which decision each represents.

Photograph the versions from comparable viewpoints if the course permits and use the same reference for scale. Keep a brief note of any accidental difference, such as a material substitution or an incomplete component. That honesty makes the comparison more useful and prevents a later explanation from overstating how controlled it was.

Ask for focused feedback

Show the mock-ups with the design question visible. Ask the reviewer what they notice about the changed feature before explaining your preferred answer. If handling is appropriate and approved, give a clear instruction about what can be touched and what remains a fragile visual representation.

Record observations in relation to the feature, not just whether someone likes the model. A comment that the opening is hard to locate gives you a possible next action; a general preference needs clarification. Keep the review within the course's arrangements and do not describe a few classmates' opinions as representative user research.

Decide what the next version needs

Choose a specific response to the feedback: retain the feature, revise it or investigate another question. Keep the most informative comparison pieces until the course no longer needs them. Reuse suitable material through the studio's process where possible, rather than storing every failed fragment without a purpose.

Compare cardboard or approved modelmaking supplies only after estimating the next iteration's actual dimensions and quantity. Check material thickness and usable sheet size, not just pack count. A useful prototype sequence makes the design reasoning visible and lets you spend effort where a physical comparison can change the decision.
