Choose a Model Scale for Your Design Question

A model can be beautifully made and still be too small to answer the question your project asks. You might need to compare spatial relationships, inspect a connection or explore how an object sits in a hand. Decide what must be visible or usable before selecting a scale because it is familiar or convenient.

Ask whether the course specifies a scale or model type. When you have a choice, use a rough trial to test the decision before preparing a complete materials order. A simple representation can reveal that you need a different scale without consuming the time intended for developing the design itself.

Name the question the model answers

Write a sentence describing the intended judgement: compare the massing of two buildings, show the arrangement of a room or examine a particular opening. Keep this separate from the general project title. Different questions may justify different models rather than one object that tries to communicate every detail at once.

Identify what the viewer must be able to see without a long explanation. For a spatial arrangement, relative positions may matter more than surface finish. For a connection detail, the relationship between components may need a much larger representation than the rest of the design. Discuss that distinction with the tutor before choosing materials.

Calculate the overall footprint

Use the course's scale method to calculate the approximate model dimensions, including a base or surrounding context where required. Check the units carefully and make a small worked example before applying the ratio throughout. A scale ruler can be useful, but it does not replace understanding which scale and units you are using.

Draw the footprint on paper or lay out a simple outline at the proposed model size. Check the available working and critique space. Include room for viewers to inspect it, and ask about storage if the completed object will remain in the studio between sessions rather than assuming a free shelf will appear later.

Trial the smallest important feature

Make or sketch one representative feature at the proposed scale using an approved simple material. Ask whether it can be represented clearly through the techniques you are trained to use. If the detail becomes too small or fragile, reconsider its representation instead of assuming more advanced equipment is the only solution.

The Design Museum's prototyping activity treats scale and physical making as things to explore. Apply that idea to the specific feature you need to assess. An enlarged detail model alongside a simpler overall model may communicate the design more clearly than forcing a tiny feature into a single comprehensive object.

Match material to the model's purpose

Discuss suitable materials with the workshop team before purchasing. UAL's architecture modelmaking course lists basic materials and documentation as part of the process, but your own course and facilities determine what is permitted. Do not select a material that requires equipment or methods beyond your induction simply because it resembles the proposed final building or product.

Use an inexpensive permitted mock-up to check proportion and assembly sequence first. Label what is represented symbolically, such as a solid block standing for a complex structure. Avoid implying that a scale model proves the strength, comfort or regulatory suitability of the full-size proposal; those require other forms of evaluation.

Record the choice for critique

Put the scale, purpose and important simplifications on a concise model note. Explain why that scale helps answer the design question and what it cannot show. If the tutor asks for another view or detail, the note helps you decide whether to revise the existing model or make a separate focused study.

Compare a scale ruler or modelmaking supplies only after the scale and permitted method are settled. Check markings, dimensions and material quantities against the plan. The useful result is a model whose size supports a clear decision, with enough information for someone else to interpret it without mistaking a representation for a finished engineering test.
