Diagnose high or 100% disk usage in Windows 11 without guessing which service is responsible. This guide starts with Task Manager, available storage, startup apps, updates and drive health so you can identify the real source before making changes.
Safe troubleshooting order: • Restart and allow pending updates to finish • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc • Sort Processes by Disk and note the sustained top user • Check the Performance tab and drive type • Close or update the responsible app when safe • Review unnecessary Startup apps • Check free space and Cleanup recommendations • Run Windows Security and manufacturer diagnostics • Back up important files if the drive reports errors or unusual noise
Avoid disabling Windows services blindly; high activity can have several causes.
