Microphone not working in a meeting: check the selected input
Check the meeting app, selected microphone and device permissions before buying a replacement headset.
Start with the exact symptom: no input, very quiet sound or the wrong microphone being used. Check physical mute switches and the app's mute state. A headset can be connected for playback while another device remains selected for recording.

Test outside the meeting
Use a built-in recording tool or the platform's test call if available. Record a short phrase and listen back. If it works outside the meeting app, focus on that app's selected input and permissions.
Check operating-system microphone access using official instructions. On a managed device, organisation settings may apply; ask support rather than trying to bypass them. Close applications that may be using the device and retest normally.
Check the connection
Reconnect the headset to a supported port and inspect obvious cable damage. If using Bluetooth or an adapter, check the device and platform's supported call mode. A passive adapter cannot necessarily convert every headset connection.
Test a known-good compatible microphone if available. Change one part at a time so the result identifies something useful.
Before replacing hardware
- Check physical and app mute states.
- Record a sample outside the meeting.
- Confirm the selected input and microphone permissions.

USB headset
Consider one when the existing hardware is faulty or cannot support the required connection. Check computer and platform compatibility, then test a recording before relying on it for a meeting.
Headset adapter
Match the exact headset plug and computer sockets. An adapter that physically fits may still route microphone and headphone signals incorrectly for your setup.
