Slow laptop: record the bottleneck before replacing it
Check when a laptop slows down, what is running and how much storage remains before buying an upgrade.
Write down the symptom precisely: slow startup, one unresponsive application or everything slowing after prolonged use. Note when it began and any recent changes. This gives you a repeatable test and avoids treating every slowdown as a need for more memory.

Try a controlled session
Save your work and restart normally. Open only the application you need and repeat the task. Check the operating system's built-in resource information for sustained high usage, using official guidance for your version.
Check available storage and whether updates are waiting. Do not install random “cleaner” or driver tools to chase a generic performance score. On a work or university device, use your IT support process before making system changes.
Separate software from hardware
If one application is affected, check its official support and system requirements. If the laptop becomes unusually hot or noisy, ensure its vents are unobstructed and follow the manufacturer's guidance. Do not open or repair an unfamiliar device as a first step.
An upgrade is useful only when supported by the model and linked to a confirmed limitation. Some laptops have non-upgradeable components, so check exact service information before ordering parts.
What to record for support
- The task, time and application affected.
- Whether a normal restart changes the behaviour.
- Available storage and any exact error message.

External SSD
Can provide additional storage for suitable files when space is the limitation. It will not fix every CPU, memory or software problem, and moved files still need a backup.
Laptop memory
Buy only after confirming the exact model supports replacement and the specification required. Use competent installation help where appropriate; similar-looking memory is not necessarily compatible.
