Bluetooth accessory will not connect: check pairing and ownership

Check power, pairing mode and existing connections before replacing a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse or headset.

Find the accessory's exact model and pairing instructions. Some devices have separate modes or saved-device slots. Being switched on is not always the same as being discoverable for a new connection.

Check the existing connection

Look for another device the accessory may already be connected to, such as a phone or previous computer. Follow the manufacturer's method to switch or disconnect it. Do not remove another person's saved connection without their agreement.

Check battery or charge and move the accessory close to the intended device for a test. Confirm the computer supports the accessory's required functions and operating system.

Re-pair carefully

Use the official steps for removing and pairing the device if the simpler checks fail. Make sure you know how to enter pairing mode before deleting a working saved entry. For keyboards, retain another way to control the computer if needed.

On managed computers, Bluetooth availability may be restricted. Contact IT support instead of installing an unapproved adapter or changing security settings.

Before buying

  • Confirm the accessory is in the correct pairing mode.
  • Check charge and any existing connected device.
  • Verify required features are supported by the computer.
