Paying the minimum keeps a credit card account up to date, but it can make repayment take much longer and increase the total interest paid. This UK beginner guide explains how minimum payments work, why they usually fall as the balance falls, and how to understand the repayment information on your statement.

If you can afford to pay more, even a fixed amount above the minimum can reduce repayment time. If payments are becoming difficult, contact your lender or a free debt-advice service early.
