Learn how to write clear instructions for a Microsoft Copilot Studio agent. Effective instructions define the agent’s role, scope, decision rules, response style and boundaries while referring only to tools and knowledge sources that are actually configured.
Instruction-writing checklist: • State the agent’s purpose and intended users • Define in-scope and out-of-scope requests • Give ordered steps for important workflows • Specify response format only when useful • Add clear constraints and escalation rules • Reference configured tools or knowledge by name • Avoid conflicting, vague or impossible instructions • Test several phrasings and edge cases • Revise instructions after observing real failures
