Choose a study notebook by the work you do

A study notebook should suit the notes you make and how you find them again.

Compare page layout and binding with your task. A larger notebook provides more space, but it also needs to fit your desk and the bag you carry.

Choose the page structure

Decide whether you mostly write prose, draw diagrams or work through calculations. Check ruling, grid size or blank pages. Avoid buying a complicated planner layout when your course notes need flexible space.

Check paper and pen together

Read paper information and try a permitted sample with your usual pen where possible. Ink behaviour varies. Do not assume a high paper-weight figure alone establishes how every pen will perform.

Plan an index

Leave a simple contents page or use another method that lets you find a topic. Add dates and module headings consistently. The best binding does not solve notes that lack a usable reference.

Keep the notebook accessible

Check whether it lies open comfortably and whether page turning suits you. Consider an alternative format or support if handwriting creates a barrier. Choose around access and retrieval rather than a stationery collection you feel obliged to fill.

Make the next decision from your own setup

Before choosing a paid resource or buying stationery, try the method with materials you already have. Record the point where you need more help or a different format. Use that observation to select support or equipment, and check access requirements. A new notebook or course should answer a learning need you can describe. Use these checks when comparing a study notebook by the work you do.
