Console storage upgrades: distinguish playing from archiving
Check whether additional console storage can run your games or only store them before buying a drive.
Console storage rules vary by model and game generation. Find the exact official storage guidance for your console before comparing drives. A USB connection or large capacity does not guarantee that current-generation games can run directly from that device.

Audit the library first
Open storage settings and identify the games you still play. Remove unwanted captures or unused installations only after checking what is backed up and how saves are handled. Record how much space your active games actually need.
If a slow download is the main inconvenience, archiving games may be useful. If you need to launch several games without moving them, the required storage type may be different. Name that requirement before shopping.
Check the approved specification
For internal expansion, follow the console maker's instructions for drive type, dimensions, cooling and installation. For external storage, confirm formatting and content restrictions. Formatting may erase a drive, so never attach your only copy of personal files as an experiment.
Compare usable capacity and the total price, including a required enclosure or cooling component. Do not improvise around a compatibility requirement because another drive is cheaper.
Decide whether an upgrade is necessary
- Keep only regularly played games installed if that is sufficient.
- Choose archive storage when moving games is acceptable.
- Choose supported expansion when direct play is required.

Console SSD
Search for your exact console's supported specification. Check whether the listing includes required cooling and whether the drive enables direct play for the game generation you use.
External hard drive
Potentially useful for supported archive storage. Confirm the console's rules before purchase and dedicate the drive as required rather than mixing it with irreplaceable personal backups.
No matching UK listings currently pass the publication checks. You can still use the guide and browse the topic searches above.
