A second monitor shows no picture: check the signal path

Check power, selected input, cable and device support before replacing a monitor that shows no picture.

Write down the complete connection: computer port, cable, any dock or adapter and the monitor input. A fault can occur at any point. Keep the exact model names available because similar ports can support different functions.

Start at the display

Confirm the monitor has power and its on-screen menu works. Select the input matching the connected cable. If a known-good compatible device is available, test the display with that device before assuming the panel has failed.

Reconnect cables carefully and remove unnecessary adapters for a direct supported test where possible. A charging-capable USB-C port does not automatically support video output; check the computer's documentation.

Check the computer settings

Use the operating system's official display guidance to detect and enable the additional screen. Confirm the chosen resolution and refresh rate are supported by the complete connection. A dock may have limits when several displays are attached.

On a managed computer, ask support before changing drivers or firmware. Avoid downloading display tools from an unfamiliar site or treating a firmware update as a harmless first experiment.

Give support a useful report

  • List every device and adapter in the path.
  • State whether the monitor menu appears.
  • Record the result of a known-good cable or direct connection test.
