Wi-Fi problems: one device or the whole connection?
Find out whether a Wi-Fi problem affects one device, one room or the whole connection before replacing equipment.
Record the device, location and symptom. “Connected without internet” is different from not seeing the network at all. Check whether other devices can use the same network and whether the affected device works in another suitable location.

Compare without changing everything
Move closer to the router and repeat the same task. If available and supported, try Ethernet using a safely routed cable. A better wired result points towards the local wireless path, but does not by itself identify the exact cause.
Check the provider's service status if several devices are affected. A broadband outage cannot be fixed by buying a new wireless adapter. Save work before restarting equipment and use the provider's documented restart method.
Use the official device guidance
Follow the operating-system or device maker's troubleshooting sequence. Be cautious with steps that remove saved networks or reset settings; make sure you know the necessary connection details first. On managed devices or university networks, ask IT support rather than altering security settings.
Avoid disabling protection or installing unknown network utilities. If the issue persists, give support the comparison results instead of repeating “the internet is slow”.
Before buying
- Compare another device and a nearer location.
- Check the provider's service status.
- Try a supported wired connection where practical.

Ethernet cable
Useful for a controlled test or a reliable supported connection. Measure the safe route and check ports; avoid creating a trip hazard through a hallway for a temporary experiment.
Wi-Fi adapter
Consider one only when the device's wireless hardware or capability is the identified limitation. Confirm operating-system support and available ports before buying.
